Child-size furniture for the perfect-fit library

Do you remember how big everything was when you were a child? The world was an unexplored expanse waiting to be discovered. And you longed for your independence to go on adventures without needing an adult.

To nurture that curiosity and fuel that independence, a children’s library zone needs to be child-size. The shelving needs to be at a height where they can reach the books on the top shelf. The tables and chairs need to be the perfect fit. The display needs to be at their eye-level. All of this so that children can feel the space is made especially for them and that they can enjoy all it has to offer with or without mum and dad.

The youth zone is a cosy area for the young users – those who don’t want to be seen as children but still aren’t adults – the teens. The zone should be a cool place with its own identity and funny furniture you will not find anywhere else in the library. A place where the teens can hang out and have a good time with friends.

Different students study in different ways

The demand for library study zones is increasing as many students use the library for both individual and group study. However, what one student expects from a study zone can differ vastly from another. Some students simply need a table, a chair and an outlet for their computer or laptop, irrespective of where this is placed in the library. While others, require a quiet area which is far removed from the hustle and bustle of campus life. It is therefore pertinent to accommodate these varying needs by offering both individual and group study areas located in both social and quiet areas of the library.

The entrance area is the perfect spot for showcasing new arrivals and latest releases. It can also be used for themed displays and information boards.  Furthermore, as libraries have become a place where people meet and hang out, another good idea is to have a waiting area near the entrance area with casual seating. You could even look at placing a café nearby too.

Bring that superhero to life through the exciting world of gaming

Today’s library is a place where children can engage with popular culture and immerse themselves in learning as well as entertainment.

A gaming zone within a library needs to reflect the exciting worlds that games take place in.  Make use of graphics, vivid colours and bold furniture to bring the games to life.  Carpeting can also be used to define the zone. Not only does a carpet provide acoustic advantages, it also gives children the freedom to take off their shoes and really get involved in the fun and games.

Distinctly theming the area, makes it clear to the users who the space is intended for and gives older children and teens ownership of the area.

Once upon a time

…there was a library that wanted to invite all the small children into the magical world of books.

The librarians wondered how they could entice the children with all the wonders and adventures hidden within the pages of their books. They thought to themselves, “Let’s create a place that brings the stories to life! A place of fantasy, discovery and exploration. A place for storytelling, reading and learning”.

They hammered and painted away to create a wonderful haven for the children to enjoy the splendour of books. As soon as the last nail was hammered, the children came from far and near to listen to the stories told. They were bewitched and entranced by the fantastical world created by books and before they knew it, they were hooked. They grew up to be filled with knowledge and laughter and of course they all lived happily ever after!
